We can understand the difference between a goal and a habit as the contrast between a destination and a direction. A goal is akin to a destination, which is the ultimate point someone or something is going to while a habit is the direction or the journey toward that final destination. They are inextricably linked; one should never try to get one at the expense of the other. We cannot set and reach our goals without building habits that help us achieve them. For example, if writing a book next year is your goal, writing a one hundred words every day are the habits you form to help you reach your goal.
