Do you constantly overthink, get lost in thought, or struggle to focus? If so, you may have an overactive mind. Although having a busy mind can be positive, it can also be exhausting and overwhelming. Fortunately, there are ways to manage an overactive mind and find some peace and calm.

Before you read on, beware that these methods are standalone strategies and won’t work for everyone every time. I have tried many of them and still experimenting with some. The most effective way to deal with a racing mind for me has been exercising, praying, and writing. For some, it’s mindfulness meditation and for others venting. Try these methods, evaluate them, and adopt whichever works best for you.

Move

This is my favorite way to deal with an overactive mind. Whether you choose to dance, jog, swim, workout, you will calm your mind. Our body releases endorphin when we exercise, which helps silence the mental chatters, reduce stress, and anxiety. Engaging in any physical activity can be a great way to release pent-up energy and clear your mind.

Write Your Thoughts Down

Penning down your negative thoughts is like erasing useless ideas from your mind. There is more to us than the fleeting ideas that enter our minds. We need not be at the mercy of these negative thoughts that linger in our mind. You may feel bad at the moment, but remember that days later those negative thoughts will be totally meaningless to you. Writing intrusive thoughts down can help improve our peace of mind, happiness, and relationships.

Read

Reading something positive is another way you can help yourself when you are under the spell of negative thoughts. Research conducted by David D. Burns has proven that patients with depression improved exponentially just by reading. Reading a good book gives you access to years of experience of someone who has overcome the challenge you are facing. Isn’t that amazing? Remember to adopt a childlike curiosity when reading and always try to connect what you read with your own experience.

Get in Touch with Nature

Spending time by a lake, a beach or a forest is another form of therapy that I found to be truly efficacious. Going for a walk in a peaceful place will help you clear your mind of negative thoughts. The vastness of the sea and the sound of birds singing will help you find calmness.

Meditate

One way to deal with an overactive mind is to practice mindfulness meditation. Mindfulness involves paying attention to the present moment without judgment. This can be done through meditation or simply focusing on your breath for a few minutes each day. You can use mindfulness to train your mind to become more mindful of your thoughts and emotions without getting stuck in them. Over time, this can help you become more grounded and centered.

Pray

Another way to manage an overactive mind is to pray. This means surrender control to the greater powers of nature. For me, it’s Jesus. For you, it could be any other supreme being, such as Buddha or Allah. By reminding yourself that you cannot do everything, you can create more space in your life for rest and relaxation, which can help calm your mind.

An overactive mind can be frustrating, but there are ways to manage it. By using one of these methods, you can find some peace and calm amidst the chaos. Don’t forget that it is important to take time for yourself and prioritize your mental wellbeing. With some work and perseverance, it is possible to regulate your mind and live a more balanced life.
