What Is Life Coaching? And What Does a Life Coach Do?

Simply put, life coaching is supporting a client in reaching their goals, which can be professional or personal. Life coaching differs from other wellness programs in that coaches take their clients’ uniqueness into consideration. A coach assumes coachees are resourceful and that they either hold the solutions to their problems, or they can create them.

Why Do People Hire Life Coaches?

Clients hire a life coach when they want maximum control of how they reach their goals. Neither the coach nor client can predict the outcome of a session. It’s that openness to step into the unknown that makes coaching a wildly sought-after service. Often, what one needs is not a ready-made solution to their problems, but a thought-provoking question that can provide clarity and lead them to the outcomes that best match their unique circumstance.

Here Are Some Common Coaching Topics.

  1. Executive coaching
  2. Leadership coaching
  3. Personal development coaching
  4. Communication coaching
  5. Mindfulness
  6. Wellness coach
  7. Happiness coach
  8. Mindset coaching

How Can You Spot an Effective Life Coach?

Hiring an effective coach can be a hassle, given the myriad of people who call themselves life coaches. Here is how to spot an effective coach.

They listen. This is the most important aspect of coaching; a coach learns to listen to their clients. Listening doesn’t only mean auditory perception, but attending to the client with your heart, eyes, and without judgement. Often, we equate listening to hearing; they are very different. An effective coach listens attentively to a client to help them uncover their strengths, interests, and how to leverage them to reach their goals.

An effective coach asks powerful questions. Instead of sharing our opinions, or advising clients, coaches ask powerful questions. We ask questions to clients to stimulate their imagination and help them arrive at their own solutions. For example, a coach might ask, “How will you act differently next time?” OR “What are some of your strengths you can leverage to help you solve this issue?”

Effective coaches respect you. This is easier written than done. Coaches learn to identify hundreds of biases and know how not to let them interfere with their judgements. The effective coach must accept your idea regardless of how crazy it may sound. While a coach’s job is to challenge you, they cannot debate you. Coaches just want to make sure you make decisions that align with your values, beliefs, and interests. For further ideas on how to recognize effective coaches, refer to this article.
