Hiring an effective coach can be a hassle, given the myriad of people who call themselves life coaches. Here is how to spot an effective coach.
They Listen
This is the most important aspect of coaching; a coach learns to listen to their clients. Listening doesn’t only mean auditory perception, but attending to the client with your heart, eyes, and without judgment. Often, we equate listening to hearing; they are very different. An effective coach listens attentively to a client to help them uncover their strengths, interests, and how to leverage them to reach their goals.
An Effective Coach Asks Powerful Questions
Instead of sharing our opinions, or advising clients, coaches ask powerful questions. We ask questions to clients to stimulate their imagination and help them arrive at their own solutions. For example, a coach might ask, “How will you act differently next time?” OR “What are some of your strengths you can leverage to help you solve this issue?”
Effective Coaches Respect You
This is easier written than done. Coaches learn to identify hundreds of biases and know how not to let them interfere with their judgments. The effective coach must accept your idea regardless of how baffling it may sound. While a coach’s job is to challenge you, they cannot debate you. Coaches just want to make sure you make decisions that align with your values, beliefs, and interests. For further ideas on how to recognize effective coaches, refer to this article.

Just sharing my two cents! I think there are more attributes for an effective coach. An effective coach shows empathy, for example. An effective coach is also aware. And the list goes on.
You are right Chen Xing! The list of attributes of an effective coach is endless. My list is not exhaustive. Thank you for sharing your two cents.
